Pine Bay Nature Reserve – Part II
In 2010 Thunder Bay Field Naturalists purchased 394 acres of nature reserve land at Pine Bay. This reserve is close to the 912 acres Pine Bay I Reserve, acquired in 2009. Together these two parcels of conservation land protect the west half of the Pine Bay shoreline on Lake Superior, and much of the Pine Bay Provincially Significant wetland. The two TBFN reserves surround a parcel of Crown Land to be regulated as the Western Lake Superior Conservation Reserve.

Supporting Partners
TBFN is most grateful for the strong support provided by several key partners.
The Natural Areas Conservation Program (NACP), a Nature Conservancy of Canada-Governemnt of Canada partnership. provided half the funding for the protection of these lands. This unique public-private program helps non-profit, non-government organizations secure ecologically sensitive lands to ensure the protection of our country’s diverse ecosystems, wildlife and habitat. The NACP also provided a dollar-for-dollar match in the purchase of our first Pine Bay Nature Reserve property in 2009.
The EJLB Foundation, a key supporting partner in the purchase of several other TBFN Nature Reserves, was once again most generous. We could not have managed this purchase without the help of these supportive partners.
Thunder Bay Field Naturalists are grateful for the support of the Ontario Land Trust Assistance Program – an Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources initiative that assists land trusts with land securement costs to help conserve Ontario’s biodiversity.
