The Year 2000
Evening Peregrine Falcon Watch

by Brian Ratcliff

FFor the past three years there has been an evening set aside to watch Peregrine Falcons at one of the local nest sites. The young falcons have always been visible, but this year (July 12, 2000) the twelve people who came out were not disappointed as three young falcons vocalized and put on an aerial display.

As one of the adult birds watched, three chicks (who had only been flying for about ten days) displayed their amazing flight agility and were seen chasing each other along the cliff face. Many of the flights dropped to tree top level and were executed at a great rate of speed.

As the local population of Peregrines continues to grow, there will be more opportunities in the future to observe the aerial acrobatics of this amazing animal.
