Gray Jay

The Gray Jay is a familiar bird in the coniferous forests of the Thunder Bay District. It was previously known as the Canada Jay, although many still call it the Whiskey Jack. The Gray Jay is slightly larger than a robin, but much of the bird's size is attributable to a thick layer of fluffy feathers. This tame bird may startle you in the woods as it glides silently right beside you, perhaps looking for a morsel of something to eat. When skiing or snowshoeing along your favourite trails, you're sure to come across an inquisitive Gray Jay sooner or later. Why not have a piece of bread ready just in case, the bird might come right to your hand to get it!
