Katydids in the Thunder Bay area

The Lappe katydid

Nick Escott reports his second district Katydid (Orthoptera) discovered at Pearl by Jody Allair et al on August 2nd, 1999. Another was observed by Sue Bryan at McKellar Hospital, Thunder Bay, on August 8th, the first one she has seen in our area. A third katydid was seen in Lappe later in August by the author (photo). The identification was made by Dr. Escott.

Nick also reports colonies of Buckeyes at Chippewa, Mission Island and Neebing Marsh this summer (this butterfly species has never been recorded in Thunder Bay city before. There are only 2 previous District records - Geraldton in 1955 and mouth of Pic River 3 yrs ago).
