1997 Thunder bay District
Birding Highlights

248 species of birds were reported in Thunder Bay District. (Up 14 from the previous year). Grasshopper Sparrow was added to the checklist. Of the 227 regularly occurring species in our area, 221 were reported in 1997. The six regular species missed were Virginia Rail, Upland Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Red-necked Phalarope, Black Tern and Red-headed Woodpecker. Breeding Upland Sandpipers and Black Terns have apparently disappeared from our area.
27 rare species were recorded in 1997 as well as two exotic species: a Chukar and a European Goldfinch.
The Third Edition (1998) of the Checklist of the Birds of Thunder Bay District, Ontario is now available. Taxonomic changes by the AOU are included in this list. The cost of the new checklist booklet is $1.00, which will merely cover costs.
